The brief

Shri Shimanchal Malu had 200 sq ft and needed it to function as a real office — somewhere staff can work, a visitor can be received, and the business looks like itself.

This is the smallest project in our portfolio and one of the most instructive. At this size there is no slack anywhere: a badly placed door swing costs a usable workstation.

The constraint

Small offices usually fail on three counts at once. They feel dark, because the lighting was designed for a bigger room and then squeezed. They feel cramped, because storage was bought rather than built. And they feel generic, because there is no wall left to say anything on.

What we did

Every element was measured against whether it earned its footprint. Storage was built in and taken to full height. Work surfaces were continuous rather than freestanding, which removes the dead space that gathers around separate desks.

Brightness was solved with lighting and reflectance rather than by pretending there was more daylight than there is: light surfaces on the large planes, and fittings placed to wash walls instead of only pointing down, which makes a small room read as bigger than its dimensions.

The brand was carried in one deliberate move rather than scattered across every surface — in a room this size, restraint is what stops it feeling like a kiosk.

The result

A compact, constrained shell now works as a bright and functional workspace that looks like the business it belongs to. It is the clearest demonstration we have that smart planning, not floor area, is what makes an office work.
