Shaheed Nagar Hotel Interiors

The brief

Pradyumna Das Choudhury's hotel serves business travellers in one of Bhubaneswar's busiest commercial areas. The brief named three constraints together: keep the capital cost controlled, keep maintenance low, and still produce interiors with a recognisable character. Spaces also had to flex between uses rather than being dedicated.

The constraint

Hotel interiors are punished daily. Guests arrive with wheeled luggage, housekeeping cleans every surface every day, and anything fragile has a measurable lifespan. Specify for appearance alone and the refurbishment cycle arrives years early, which is a bigger number than anything saved at fit-out.

Meanwhile a budget hotel cannot buy distinctiveness the way a luxury one can. The character has to come from decisions that cost nothing extra.

What we did

Durability was treated as a specification problem: hard-wearing surfaces at the heights that actually get hit, edges detailed to survive luggage, and finishes chosen for how they look after two years of cleaning rather than on the day of handover.

Character came from colour and composition rather than from expensive material. A confident palette applied consistently reads as designed; the same budget spread across many small decorative gestures reads as cheap. Public areas were planned to work for more than one use, so the hotel is not carrying rooms that earn nothing for most of the day.

The result

Interiors that suit the guest they were built for, hold up under daily turnover, and carry a visual identity strong enough to be remembered — delivered inside the budget that shaped the brief.
